Kitchens in your county

Square & True makes bespoke kitchens at a workshop on Stonham Road, Mickfield, near Stowmarket, Suffolk IP14 5LS. Most of our work is within a couple of hours of the bench, and these pages set out what that means county by county — the houses we tend to work in, the local towns and villages we cover, and how a commission runs.

Kitchens start at £35,000. There are seven ranges, and every kitchen is drawn for the room rather than assembled from stock sizes.

Counties

We work elsewhere as well. If your house is outside these four counties, tell us where it is and we will say plainly whether we are the right people for it.

How far we travel

The bench is at Mickfield, on Stonham Road between Stowmarket and Debenham. Most of what we make goes into houses within about two hours of it, which covers Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire comfortably and takes in a good deal of Hertfordshire and north London besides. Distance is not really the limit. What matters is how many times we need to be at the house — a measured survey, a second survey once the room is stripped back, then the fit itself — and whether we can get a full load to the door.

We work further afield when the job warrants it. Two of our published kitchens are in central London, and we have fitted in Oxfordshire. If your house sits outside the four counties, say where it is and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right people for it rather than quoting and hoping.

The towns we are in most often

In Suffolk: Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, Woodbridge, Framlingham, Lavenham, Long Melford, Aldeburgh and Southwold. In Essex: Chelmsford, Colchester, Saffron Walden, Dunmow, Ingatestone, Brentwood and Maldon. In Norfolk: Norwich, Wymondham, Diss, Holt, Fakenham, Burnham Market and King’s Lynn. In Cambridgeshire: Cambridge itself, Ely, Newmarket, Huntingdon, St Ives and St Neots. And the villages between all of them, which is where most of the work actually is.

What the four counties have in common

Old houses that were never square. Timber-framed hall houses, Georgian townhouses, Victorian rectories, barn conversions and farm buildings brought back into use. Almost none of it will take a run of stock cabinets without a fight, which is why every kitchen is drawn for the room and then drawn again at full size as a rod before anything is cut. Where a wall leans or a floor falls away, the cabinetry is made to suit it rather than scribed to hide it afterwards.

The practical answers are the same wherever the house is. Kitchens start at £35,000 and most land between £65,000 and £120,000. There are seven ranges to start from, all redrawn for the room. Fourteen to twenty weeks from agreed brief to installation, with a written programme before anything is made. Everything is drawn, machined, assembled, hand-painted and fitted by our own people, in one building.
