Bespoke Kitchens in Aldeburgh, Orford and Thorpeness
Square & True makes bespoke kitchens at its own workshop in Mickfield, near Stowmarket, about 30 miles from Aldeburgh. Every kitchen is drawn, made, hand-painted and fitted by the same small team, for coastal houses as much as for those inland.
Kitchens for the Aldeburgh coast
Aldeburgh runs along the shingle beneath its Tudor Moot Hall, with terraces and fishermen’s cottages on the seafront and larger houses behind. A few miles south, Orford gathers around its twelfth-century castle keep and quay. Thorpeness, built in the early twentieth century as a holiday village around the Meare, has its own distinctive mock-Tudor and weatherboarded houses.
Each brings its own kitchen problems: small rooms and low ceilings in the cottages, awkward extensions in the older houses, and in Thorpeness, rooms laid out for summer rather than year-round cooking. We draw every kitchen for the room as it is, and make use of the space catalogue units leave behind.

Building for the sea air
A house close to the beach is harder on a kitchen than one inland. Salt in the air marks some metals quickly, so we agree hinges, handles and taps at the design stage. Solid brass and good marine-grade fittings age well by the coast; cheaper plated finishes can pit.
Second homes
Many houses along this coast are second homes. If yours is, tell us at the start so surveys, sample approvals and fitting can be planned around the dates you can be there. Every kitchen is dry-fitted in our workshop before it leaves, which keeps the time needed in the house short.
How a coastal kitchen is made
- Survey. We measure the room ourselves; the person who measures it is the person who draws it.
- Drawings. Plans and elevations, then a full-size setting-out before anything is machined.
- Workshop. Made bench by bench at Mickfield and dry-fitted there before delivery.
- Fitting. Installed by our own fitters, not subcontracted.
Most kitchens take 14 to 20 weeks from agreed brief to installation. They start from £45,000, and most land between £65,000 and £120,000 before appliances and stone. See what a kitchen costs.
Aldeburgh, Orford and Thorpeness kitchen questions
Do you make kitchens for houses in Aldeburgh?
Yes. Aldeburgh, Orford and Thorpeness are all within about 30 miles of our workshop at Mickfield, in the area we survey, deliver to and fit ourselves.
Can you fit a kitchen in a second home while we are away?
Tell us at the start. We plan the programme around the dates you can be there, and dry-fitting in the workshop keeps the time needed in the house short.
What hardware lasts best near the sea?
Solid brass and good marine-grade fittings stand up best to salt air. We agree them at the design stage rather than leaving them to the end.
