A London kitchen is won or lost on access
Both of our published London kitchens are in buildings that make delivery difficult. One is on the lower ground floor of a Westminster townhouse. The other is in a South Kensington mews.
Neither has a loading bay, a lift, or anywhere to leave a lorry. That is normal in central London, and it is the constraint that decides how a kitchen has to be designed and built — not an afterthought once the drawings are approved.
Why we dry-fit before anything leaves Mickfield
Every kitchen is dry-fitted in the workshop before delivery. It is assembled, checked and taken apart again while it is still standing on our floor with every tool in the building within reach.
In Suffolk that is a sensible discipline. In a Kensington mews it is the difference between a three-day installation and a disaster, because the one thing you cannot do on a London job is discover a problem at eight in the morning with the van on a single yellow line. Anything that was going to fight was made to fit sixty miles earlier.
Deliveries into London are consolidated into full loads rather than run piecemeal.
Westminster: a townhouse lower ground floor
Hand-painted in-frame in the Suffolk range, four coats brushed by hand. An island with a curved solid walnut breakfast bar, dark stone worktops, and the refrigeration taken into the joinery so it reads as cabinetry rather than as appliances lined up against a wall.
Birch ply carcasses, mortice-and-tenon solid timber frames, through-dovetailed oak drawers. A lower ground floor is a difficult room — less light, lower ceiling, and every piece carried down — which is exactly why the proportions have to be drawn rather than assumed.

South Kensington: a mews
The Kensington range: sprayed graphite slab fronts, handleless, with a white solid worktop and a square edge, and a back-painted glass splashback in soft green. Behind it, a painted in-frame scullery in soft green-grey with oak worktops.
Two finishing systems, two rooms, one house — sprayed at the front, brushed behind. Both were done in our own booth and prep room at Mickfield, by the same two men, which is the only reliable way to make a sprayed room and a brushed room look like they belong to each other.
The finished rooms are even better than we imagined. Beautiful joinery, thoughtful lighting, and a level of craftsmanship you just don’t see in off-the-shelf kitchens. It feels like a proper investment rather than a temporary makeover.

Working with your architect and your builder
Most London work reaches us through an architect or an interior designer, and most of it sits inside a wider building contract. We are used to that. We will take the interfaces with M&E and stone directly, provide setting-out drawings for services eight weeks before we arrive, and work to the main contractor’s programme.
Our fitters are CSCS-carded and we carry full site insurance, so a managed site is no different to us than an occupied house.

Come and see it made
The workshop is an hour and a quarter from London by rail. Clients generally come twice, once during machining and once during finishing, and most say the second visit is the one that matters — it is when the colour goes on and the thing stops being joinery.
What it costs
Fitted kitchens start at £45,000. Freestanding starts at £35,000. The £500 design fee covers a measured survey at the house, a full design with elevations of every run, a rendered visual, real samples and a fixed itemised quotation, and it comes back in full against the commission.
