The work
Painted in-frame throughout in a soft olive green, with plain recessed panels and a pale solid worktop. The tall units run to the cornice and take the ovens in a stack, with the hob on the return under a leaded steel casement.
The room is deliberately quiet. In a house that already has leaded windows, stone floors and moulded plasterwork, a kitchen that competes with any of it looks like a showroom that has been dropped in.
The utility
The utility is the better room, and it usually is. A full wall of painted tall cupboards with slatted doors, floor to ceiling, over black granite; two washing machines and a dryer set into the run; a sink under the window; and a line of caged glass pendants along the length of it.
Slatted doors are there for a reason rather than a look. A cupboard holding damp coats, boots, laundry or a boiler needs to breathe, and a slatted door lets it without an ugly grille cut into a panel.
Two rooms, one language
The kitchen and the utility are made from the same frames, the same rails and the same paint system, and differ only in the door. That is what makes a house feel joined up: the joinery in the back corridor is recognisably the same hand as the joinery in the kitchen, not a cheaper version of it.
